Thierry Lebel and Benjamin Sultan guests of “Cultures Monde” on France-Culture

"Sahel: floods in a dry land"

On Tuesday, September 21, Thierry Lebel and Benjamin Sultan, researchers of the CECC project, were the guests of Florian Delormes in the program “Cultures Monde” of the French radio France Culture, for the 2nd episode of the series “Climate change – living with disasters”. During this exchange, they discussed the devastating floods that have been affecting the Sahel more and more frequently for the past decade. While the Sahelian countries were hit hard by drought in the 1970s and 1980s, they are now facing a new climate regime, with extreme and destructive rainfall events, to which they must now adapt. The management of the resulting floods is a challenge, both in terms of forecasting and post-disaster management.

The guests discussed how the States and populations of the Sahel are coping with this climatic intensification, and to what extent its effects could be cushioned by appropriate planning policies, both in urban and rural areas.
rural areas. They also discussed the consequences of this new climate regime for crops.
